Born to a family of low status in Dalmatia, \u003cbr\u003eDiocletian rose through the ranks of the military to become a cavalry commander \u003cbr\u003eof the Emperor Carus's army. After the deaths of Carus and his son Numerian on \u003cbr\u003ecampaign in Persia, Diocletian was proclaimed emperor. The title was also \u003cbr\u003eclaimed by Carus's surviving son, Carinus, but Diocletian defeated him in the \u003cbr\u003eBattle of the Margus.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDiocletian's reign stabilized the empire and ended the Crisis of the Third \u003cbr\u003eCentury. He appointed fellow officer Maximian as Augustus, co-emperor, in 286. \u003cbr\u003eDiocletian reigned in the Eastern Empire, and Maximian reigned in the Western \u003cbr\u003eEmpire. Diocletian delegated further on 1 March 293, appointing Galerius and \u003cbr\u003eConstantius as junior co-emperors (each with the title Caesar), under himself \u003cbr\u003eand Maximian respectively. Under the Tetrarchy, or \"rule of four\", each emperor \u003cbr\u003ewould rule over a quarter-division of the empire. Diocletian secured the \u003cbr\u003eempire's borders and purged it of all threats to his power. He defeated the \u003cbr\u003eSarmatians and Carpi during several campaigns between 285 and 299, the Alamanni \u003cbr\u003ein 288, and usurpers in Egypt between 297 and 298. Galerius, aided by \u003cbr\u003eDiocletian, campaigned successfully against Sassanid Persia, the empire's \u003cbr\u003etraditional enemy. In 299 he sacked their capital, Ctesiphon.
