This marriage was clearly organized to strengthen the bonds between the \u003cbr\u003etwo emperors.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eValeria was raised to the title of Augusta and Mater Castrorum in November 308. \u003cbr\u003eSince Galerius fathered no child with her, Valeria adopted her husband's \u003cbr\u003eillegitimate son, Candidianus, as her own. In her honor, Galerius renamed the \u003cbr\u003eprovince of Upper Pannonia Valeria, which he had improved by draining marshes \u003cbr\u003eand removing forests.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen Galerius died, in 311, Licinius was entrusted with the care of Valeria and \u003cbr\u003eher mother Prisca. The two women, however, fled from Licinius to Maximinus Daia, \u003cbr\u003ewhose daughter was betrothed to Candidianus. After a short time, Valeria refused \u003cbr\u003ethe marriage proposal of Maximinus, who arrested and confined her in Syria and \u003cbr\u003econfiscated her properties. At the death of Maximinus, Licinius ordered the \u003cbr\u003edeath of both women. Valeria and Prisca fled, hiding for a year, until they were \u003cbr\u003erecognized by residents in Thessaloniki. She and her mother were captured by \u003cbr\u003eLicinius' soldiers, beheaded in the central square of the city, and their bodies \u003cbr\u003ethrown in the sea.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/font\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"center\" style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: 14pt;\"\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003cfont size=\"5\"\u003eValeria was sympathetic towards Christians, while Galerius persecuted them.
