During his \u003cbr\u003ereign, he faced external pressure from Germanic raiders, who pillaged the \u003cbr\u003eeastern and northern parts of his empire, and the Roman Empire, from which the \u003cbr\u003eGallic Empire had seceded. He also faced increasing internal pressure, which led \u003cbr\u003ehim to declare his son, Tetricus II, caesar in 273 and possibly co-emperor in \u003cbr\u003e274, although this is debated. The Roman emperor Aurelian invaded in 273 or 274, \u003cbr\u003eleading to the Battle of Châlons, at which Tetricus surrendered. Whether this \u003cbr\u003ecapitulation was the result of a secret agreement between Tetricus and Aurelian \u003cbr\u003eor necessary after his defeat is debated. Aurelian spared Tetricus, and even \u003cbr\u003emade him a senator and corrector (governor) of Lucania et Bruttium.
