Schönbach, who came from northern
Bohemia, came to Vienna as a child, where he graduated from the
Piarist Gymnasium in 1867. He then studied at the University of
Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1871. The habilitation in
1872 dealt with the rhyming prose of St. Cecilia, the inaugural
speech the development of the Grail legend.



In 1873 Schönbach became an associate professor at the University of
Graz, and in 1876 a full professor. He worked out the statutes for
the first seminar for German philology to be founded in the
Austro-Hungarian monarchy and was professor from 1876 to 1911.
During this time he published numerous articles and reviews for the
arts section of the Grazer Tagespost[1].



Schönbach became a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of
Sciences in 1895 and a full member in 1903. He was a corresponding
member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences from 1906. In 1903
he was appointed Hofrat.



Anton Emanuel Schönbach died in 1911 during his long summer vacation
in Vorarlberg, where he had suggested founding the Montafon Homeland
Security Association. He was buried in Graz. In 1932, Schönbachgasse
in Vienna-Hietzing was named after him.
