Silver Medal of Merit for the National Campaign of 1906

Circular silver medal with lateral loop .

Obverse:  ‘LIBERTAD / 15 / DE SET. DE / 1821’ (Liberty 15 September 1821, the date the Captaincy-General of Guatemala proclaimed its independence from Spain) imposed on crossed rifles, a quetzal bird above, crossed sabres below, all on a circular laurel wreath, circumscribed ‘CAMPAÑA NACIONAL DE 1906’, an arabesque below;

Reverse : ‘HONOR AL MERITO’ within a stylised laurel wreath;

 diameter 22mm .Toned.VF Condition.

In early June 1906, El Salvador and Honduras declared war on Guatemala and El Salvador’s former President General Tomás Regalado, now Minister of War, led a Salvadorian invasion of Guatemala but is said to have gone into battle whilst drunk and suffered serious wounds of which he died at Yupiltepeque near the Salvadorian border on 11 June 1906. The campaign lasted just eight days, the invasion being repulsed.
