France 1200-1300 Silver Denier Besancon
These Medieval coins are the earliest
that featured the Right Hand of God, "Manus Dei" in Latin, without depicting who
was receiving the blessing.
This gave everyday people of the time the
suggestion that they were a recipient of that divine blessing.
France Silver Denier. 16 mm. 1.11g.
Issued circa 1200-1300 AD.
Obverse: Hand of God at center.
Reverse: Short Cross centered.
