BÉARN - SEIGNEURIE BÉARN OF - THE CENTULLES

(XI-XIV centuries)

This is Centulle Young III, Viscount (1012-1058), who received the Duke of
Aquitaine Sancho the Great's sovereignty and usurped the right of coinage. In
reality, the coinage did not begin until 1080 under Centulle IV (1058-1088) who
took the name Earl (for Oloron Bigorre). Centulle V died in 1134. Mint yet still
continued for nearly two hundred years.
