Charlemagne Masséna Péralte (1886 - 1919) is
a nationalist leader of Haiti. He resisted the US invasion of his country in
1915, leading guerrilla fighters called the Cacos. Although he succeeded in
establishing a provisional government in the north of Haiti in 1917, he was
betrayed by one of his own men and shot dead in 1919. He was given a national
funeral after the end of the US occupation in 1935.
