HOUSE OF CONSTANTINE

Constantius II AD 337-361 AE Nummus

GRADED  NGC  AU

Obv: Diademed head of Constantius II right "DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG"

Rev:  FEL TEMP REPARATIO, soldier attacking left, thrusting spear at fallen horseman

Constantius II is a real shaggy dog story of an imperial career. He spent all of his time dealing with stuff that came up: war with Persia, usurpers within the empire, succession problems. He put through administrative reforms too, pointing the government toward the form it would take in Byzantine times. About ten years into the reign they had a coinage reform in which a larger billon coin, the maiorina was introduced. The reverse type is notable: the Roman soldier spears the fallen horseman, the legend FEL TEMP REPARATIO means “Happy Days are Here Again.”
