Obverse: A crowned double-headed eagle,
symbolizing the Russian Empire, overpowering a Persian lion, representing Qajar
Iran. Rays of the rising sun emanate in the background, signifying the dawn of
Russian control over Yerevan. The inscription at the bottom reads "ЕРИВАНЬ ВЗЯТА
1ГО ОКТЯБРЯ 1827," translating to "Yerevan taken on October 1, 1827."
Reverse: A commemorative inscription honoring the reign of Emperor Nicholas I,
marking the striking of this medal in Tabriz during the Russian military
occupation. The inscription reads: "ВЪ ЦАРСТВОВАНIЕ ИМПЕРАТОРА НИКОЛАЯ IГО
ЧЕКАНЕНО ВЪ ТАВРИЗЂ ВО ВРЕМЯ ПРЕБЫВАНIЯ РОССIЙСКИХЪ ВОЙСКЪ 6ГО ДЕКАБРЯ 1827,"
which translates to "During the reign of Emperor Nicholas I, struck in Tabriz
during the presence of Russian troops, December 6, 1827."

The capture of Erivan (or Erevan/Yerevan; Persian: فتح ایروان, romanized: Fath e Iravān; Russian: Взятие Эривани, romanized: Vzyatie Ėrivani) took place on 1 October 1827, during the Russo-Persian War of 1826–28. The city fell to the Russians after being besieged for a week and opened up the path for the eventual capture of Tabriz, the second largest city in Iran and an important trading post
