During the 11th–13th centuries, the hryvnia was not a coin but an official silver ingot used as currency and a measure of weight across Kyivan Rus' (the medieval state spanning modern Ukraine).Kyiv Hryvnia: Distinctive hexagonal (six-sided) silver ingots weighing roughly 150 to 165 grams. These were primarily produced and used as the main currency in the southern territories around Kyiv.Following the collapse of Kyivan Rus' in the 13th century, the circulation of the hryvnia ingot lapsed.


Bernhard F. Brekke was a prominent Norwegian numismatist and author, internationally renowned for his expertise in Russian. He is best known for authoring The Copper Coinage of Imperial Russia 1700–1917. Published in 1977.
